First Post

Welcome to my blog. This is a space I plan to use to document my work, and share some of the things that inspire me. I always thought I'd be an artist but it wasn't until I was in my 30's that I began the process of figuring out how exactly one does that! People often say things like, 'Oh, you paint? That must be fun.' Or, 'I would love to paint, it would be so relaxing."
HA
Don't get me wrong, I know they mean well but if you've ever struggled with the artistic process you know there are all sorts of emotions you go through but it's more like a roller coaster ride than a day at the spa. Exhilarating at times, yes, but also terrifying.

  1. For what it's worth Fern, my inclination while making art is to think of the instruments in my hands something like driving a car, riding a bicycle or walking along. I may not know where my final destination may be, but I want to enjoy the process of discovery along the way.
In the end, it will hopefully be memorable and the result of the decisions of the twists and turns I made as I went, and only I need decide when the trip is over, when I feel I've arrived where I want.

BC artist Robert Genn has a terrific twice-weekly blog filled with inspirational insights about being an artist.
BTW, I really like your birds and sky painting. I can feel the space.

    1. Thanks Dean, for your thoughtful response. And you are so right; the process of discovery is one to enjoy. In fact, it can be an absolute thrill when everything comes together and you've created something that feels right.

I'll have a look at Robert Genn's blog now, I need a little inspiration!
